The Workforce Challenge We’re Solving
The U.S. faces a critical shortage of skilled construction workers, requiring more than 700,000 new hires each year to keep pace with housing demand. Without action, this gap threatens housing availability, affordability, and economic growth. Driven by rapid industry expansion, an aging workforce, and declining interest in the trades, the need for solutions has never been greater.
HBI’s Role
Home Builders Institute (HBI) leads the effort to close the construction labor gap by equipping individuals with the skills, training, and opportunities needed to succeed in the building industry.

OUR HISTORY
For nearly 60 years, HBI has been training and educating America’s home construction workforce. HBI was founded by the National Association of Home Builders and funded initially by the Department of Labor to create tuition-free pre-apprenticeship training programs for different communities to learn homebuilding skills and end the labor shortage. Over these last several decades, we have continued to build out our programs offering and expanding our footprint in the construction industry.

Corps
For over 50 years, HBI has partnered with Job Corps to train young adults for construction careers.
Community & Corrections
HBI partners with various agencies to offer CTE programs to underserved and recovering populations.
Military Services
HBI provides trades training to Service Members, Veterans, & their families, ensuring future success and stability.
Future Builders of America
FBA partners to provide HBI licensed curriculum to schools and youth programs.
BuildStrong Academies
The BuildStrong Academies offer tuition-free trades training for future builders.
These 5 HBI pillars provide no-cost pre-apprenticeship residential construction training, industry-recognized certifications, employability and job placement assistance to equip graduates for success in the workforce.
Across the nation, HBI’s programs ensure that participants gain the necessary skills, experience and credentials to excel in their chosen field.
