Transitioning Military Program:

HBI has partnered with The Home Depot Foundation (THDF) to develop specialized trades training programs located near 10 of the largest military installations in the nation. Supported by a 10-year and $50 million THDF commitment, this initiative is a part of the Foundation’s long term $500 million investment in veteran-related causes. Each of the 10 programs provides certified trades training and produces qualified graduates.

With the approval of their chain of command, transitioning servicemembers in each region served by an HBI training facility can participate in the cost-free 12-week program; no military or GI Bill funding is required as part of the Department of Defense (DoD) SkillBridge program. During the program, servicemembers spend up to 75% of their time in hands-on training, earn professional certifications and receive job placement support.

Prior to enrolling in the DoD SkillBridge Transitioning Military Program, service members complete an interview with HBI staff.


After completing the HBI Transitioning Military Program, students are fully trained and certified to work in a construction trade. HBI’s PACT program prepares participating service members to fill semi-skilled positions upon completion. A second phase of the program provides participants comprehensive job placement support. Our goal is to ensure that each participant is prepared to find gainful employment and pursue a thriving new career. We equip our graduates with the confidence needed to successfully transition, regardless of geographic location, upon retiring their service uniform. PACT graduates emerge from the program highly skilled, certified and in demand by employers in the construction industry.

Military personnel returning to civilian life often need alternative skills and career options beyond what they did in the military and outside of the GI Bill traditional education route. HBI’s veterans program creates a unique opportunity through job readiness and career connections that inspire hope, confidence, and long-term success for graduates in a career field that desperately needs their skills and experience.

This program, which launched in 2012, offers a specialized approach to construction training for veterans. Established to empower our nation’s veterans with the skills and experience necessary to secure ­meaningful careers in the construction industry, HBI’s veterans program is available to active-duty military servicemembers within 180 days of separation, as well as their dependents and spouses. Program participants receive professional guidance applicable to every stage of the employment continuum. Participants receive training, certification, and counsel on how to effectively assess opportunities and network within the construction industry, resulting in successful placement in high-growth careers.

Through our pre-apprenticeship certificate training (PACT), HBI is able to combine academic learning and hands-on experience to deliver sustainable construction trade education. PACT graduates emerge from the program highly skilled, certified and well-positioned to secure construction jobs. Construction remains an in-demand business that is typically insulated from economic volatility and is continually seeking qualified workers. Our graduates are extensively trained for their jobs, as well as long-term careers in the construction industry, which increases individual marketability and employment options. The program also promotes economic self-sufficiency, access to lifelong learning and high-wage career potential for veterans and their family members.

HBI is the only nationally recognized program that educates and trains veterans to achieve lasting employment specifically in the high-growth construction industry that offers advancement and longevity. Our program does not simply train servicemembers, veterans, their dependents, and spouses; it places participants in quality jobs and provides the framework for a successful career. This includes a minimum full year of follow-up guidance supporting employment retention and continued career development.
