HBI Academies offer hands-on, industry-recognized training in the skilled trades, preparing students for rewarding careers in residential construction. Our Academy programs are available to individuals aged 18 and up who are interested in starting or enhancing their career in the construction industry.
HBI ACADEMIES PROVIDE:
- No-Cost Training – Thanks to partnerships with local homebuilders, industry partners, foundations, and individual donors, students can access training at no cost.
- Industry-Recognized Curriculum – HBI’s Pre- Apprenticeship Certificate Training (PACT) ensures students receive high-quality education aligned with industry standards.
- Job Placement Support – HBI works closely with homebuilders and employers to connect graduates with career opportunities.
- Hands-On Experience – Students gain real-world skills through practical training and on-site projects.
- Career Readiness – Training includes essential employability skills, safety certifications, and professional development to ensure long-term success.

Tiffany Devezin
BuildStrong Graduate
A May 2024 graduate of HBI’s BuildStrong Academy of Greater New Orleans, Tiffany discovered her passion for carpentry through an unexpected source—her mom! “I learned about the program from my mom. She knew that I was in a place of transition and was looking for a way to expand my ‘tool belt,’ so she began to do some research and found BuildStrong through a Facebook post.” Before joining HBI, Tiffany worked as a subcontractor but wanted to do more, learn more, and build a lasting career in construction. Through HBI’s program, she gained hands-on training, industry knowledge, and the confidence to step into a rewarding trade. Her story reflects the reality many women face—the desire to enter skilled trades but not knowing where to start. With support from her family and the right training through HBI, Tiffany is now on a path to success in carpentry, a field that welcomes skilled professionals eager to make an impact.

One of HBI’s newest initiatives in response to the extensive skilled labor shortage is the opening
of several trades training academies across the nation. The Academies represent a new learning
environment that delivers our industry-recognized skills training to a new generation of home builders.
HBI is working closely with industry and community partners such as The Home Depot Foundation,
local Home Builders Associations, corporate sponsors, and private funders to offer tuition-free
construction trades training to anyone 18 years of age or older. The Academies, now open in Orlando,
New Orleans, Houston, Phoenix, Sacramento, Charlotte, and Puerto Rico demonstrate an innovative
approach to filling the skill trades workforce gap.
Students receive hands-on training that engages all levels of experience and prepares them for a sustainable career in the construction industry. Academy students can earn HBI’s Pre-Apprenticeship Certification in Carpentry or Electrical (varies by location), as well as OSHA-10 Construction Certification – all at no cost to the student!
In addition to the skill training, students receive mentorship and job placement support throughout their training upon graduating from the program.
