Professional Women in Building Week is from September 9-13, 2024, and is the perfect time to shine a spotlight on the incredible women who are making their mark in the construction industry. This annual celebration, recognized by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), highlights the achievements of women who are paving the way for future generations in a traditionally male-dominated field. At HBI, we are proud to join NAHB this important week by featuring stories of women transforming the industry – from students and teachers to board members leading the charge.
Construction is no longer a man’s world. Although women currently make up only about 11% of the construction workforce, their numbers are steadily growing. In recent years, the industry has seen a 17% increase in the number of women working in construction, and this trend shows no signs of slowing down. Women are stepping into a variety of roles, from on-site trades like carpentry and electrical work to leadership positions in project management and design. The demand for skilled labor is high, with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicting that construction jobs will grow by 5% over the next decade. As more women enter the industry, they are filling this demand and bringing diverse perspectives that drive innovation and enhance project outcomes.
Pam Patenaude, Chair of the HBI Board of Trustees, said,
“Women are the future of construction, and it’s critical that we continue to break down barriers and create pathways for more women to enter the trades. Our industry thrives on diversity, and by empowering women with the skills and opportunities to succeed, we are not only building stronger communities but also reshaping the future of the workforce.”
During Professional Women in Building Week, we are featuring inspiring stories from women at HBI who excel in their fields. From students just starting their journey in construction to seasoned professionals mentoring the next generation, these women are proof that the future of construction is bright- and it’s diverse.
At HBI, we are committed to providing free training programs that equip women with the skills they need to succeed in the construction industry. Whether you’re interested in carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, or another trade, HBI offers hands-on training that prepares you for a rewarding career. We believe that by supporting and empowering women in construction, we are addressing the industry’s labor shortages and fostering a more inclusive and innovative workforce.
